OUR STORY
In August 2016, doctors discovered a tennis ball-sized tumor in our 5-year-old daughter's brain. Surgeons at Children's Hospital Colorado removed the low grade glioma from Marin's cerebellum, and she has experienced no major side effects to date. But a routine scan in October 2023 revealed that it had, quite unexpectedly, started to grow again. Nevertheless, she continues to be symptom-free, living her best life while playing competitive volleyball, excelling in school, and performing as lead singer in a rock band.
WHY PBTF?
Brain tumors are the #1 cause of cancer-related death among kids. Each day 13 kids in the U.S. are diagnosed with a brain tumor, but only 0.3% of cancer funding goes toward brain tumor research. Even less goes to brain tumors in kids. As a result, many children succumb to this horrible disease due to a lack of life-saving drugs and treatments. Even when long-term survival is possible, many children and families still confront daily challenges and remain, quite literally, in the fight of their lives.
Our family is very lucky. Marin's tumor had not spread through her body and was operable. Thousands of kids are not as lucky: their tumors are more aggressive than Marin's or, even when technically "benign," are inoperable and can result in cognitive/physical defects and even death.
We have partnered with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF), a four-star charity dedicated to saving the lives of kids with brain tumors while providing life-changing support for children and families dealing with this horrible diagnosis. We can personally attest to the incredible support PBTF provides families handling the ever-present worries that accompany this kind of trauma.
Most recently, PBTF has worked with Day One Biopharmaceuticals to support approval of Ojemda, an oral inhibitor that can shrink or stop growth of low grade gliomas tumors like Marin's. PBTF is pouring resources into moving it through FDA approval processes. This is just one of the many amazing things that your donation to PBTF will support.
